Blood donor deferral policies for men who have sex with men across high-income countries
Abstract
Key take-home messages
- Blood donor deferral policies related to men who have sex with men and transgender people vary significantly across countries.
- Most counties have relaxed their deferral policies for men who have sex with men in recent years. In most jurisdictions (including Canada) a permanent ban on blood donation for men who have sex with men has been replaced with a one-year deferral (i.e. men who have sex with men can donate blood after 12 months since the last sex with a man).
- Scotland, England and Wales are the first jurisdictions that have shortened donor deferral for men who have sex with men to three months.
